GNU/LinuxInternetOpinionProprietary Software

Categories: GNU/Linux, Internet, Opinion, Proprietary Software

Spurred by the recent articles and comments online, many of them complaining about the lack of a Flash Player 9 for GNU/Linux, I've decided to add my views about Adobe, formerly Macromedia, Flash to the pot.

GPL, Firefox and Tesseract

Saturday 30th September 2006

Category: News

First of all, we have Linus Tovalds sitting out the GPLv3 process, apparently being fed up with the FSF. Speaking of the FSF, there's an interview with Richard Stallman which might be worth a read, although there isn't really anything that surprising in there.

Elsewhere, there is continuing coverage of the debate over whether Firefox in Debian, as evidenced by the article Firefox Not Really Free?. Then we get an article telling us why the author is disappointed with Adobe.

After just a month and half since the Zenwalk 2.8 release, we get Zenwalk 3.0. Last time, I found Zenwalk to be lightweight and well designed, but suffering particularly when it came to package management. Let's see how this new version fares.

GNU/Linux, Debian and Firefox

Sunday 24th September 2006

Category: News

There's currently a dispute over Debian's use of Firefox, or, more specifically, its brand. Plenty of people have already commented, but some are considering that its just a storm in a teacup.

Another interesting idea that floated around Debian a short while ago was a steering committee - in case you missed it, here are just a small clutch of the pages on the web discussing it:

RISC OS and Linux Desktops

Saturday 16th September 2006

Category: News

First of all, we have the release of GNOME 2.16. This is accompanied by the release of Foresight Linux 0.9.8, with a 1.0 release expected soon.

Something that piqued my interest was an article on RISC OS, which, until recently, I had always assumed had dropped off the face of the globe. I would say I miss using RISC OS, but there again I don't think I could live with it today.

From the same site, we have the article Why Desktop Linux Will Not Take off, and Why You Don't Want It to. And finally, a post explaining why Debian Etch is not ready for release. Personally, I'm looking forward to this release - the gap between releases has being shortened, and the desktop tightened up. All in all, I think we can expect an excellent release.

Desktop Linux, ReactOS and cdrkit

Tuesday 5th September 2006

Category: News

First of all, an interesting article called Eric Raymond on Desktop Linux, which proves to be a fascinating read. Another good read is React OS: Windows done right. The project, now ten years old, aims to create a free, open source operating system fully compatible with Windows NT/2000/XP.

Finally, we have an announcement from the Debian cdrtools maintainers about cdrkit, a fork of cdrtools, due to the changes in cdrtools' licence.
