Patents, Etch and Bendy Buses

Let's start with the good news - the the European Commission has stopped handing out software patents, marking a change in heart for the EC.

In other news, bendy buses strike again - this time, instead of arson, they are attacking cake shops - is anybody safe?

Finally, an article on my distribution of choice - Debian Etch. Incidentally, a new version of apt just went into Etch, meaning that update repositories is only a case of downloading the differences, making updates a fair bit quicker.

CSS: Fonts

As useful as the CSS for fonts can be, all too often it is misused - fonts are too small, or have poor colour choice, and so on. The aim of this article is to look at the problems, and what I consider the best way to avoid them, while making text more readable and more effective.

Java; The Internet

First of all, there are talks of making Java more Linux-friendly. Personally, I'd prefer Java to be open sourced, but we can only wait and see what happens in the future.

There's also some legislation that is current going through the US Congress, which could get rid of the idea of net neutrality. Here are three articles on this: Net Freedom Now!; American Samizdat; and The End of the Internet?.

Freespire, Samba and Apache

Firstly, we have the announcement of Freespire - you might be surprised to know it is the free version of Linspire. It also involves the developer of the old Freespire, which was promptly renamed SquiggleOS, and then discountinued. This new distribution has already come under fire.

We also have the creater of Samba talking in a Microsoft case, while Apache has become the leader in SSL servers.

Quick Look: Xubuntu Beta 2

So far, we have had Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Edubuntu, covering GNOME and KDE - the two major desktop environments. Now, for the Dapper Drake release, XFCE is to be added to the mix in the form of Xubuntu.
